Results from 2021 Match Play Championship
Joe Arron and Ron Leidig are the 2021 Match Play champions. Joe won the Gross Flight with a 5 and 4 win over Greg Northcraft. Joe reports that they both struggled on the 1st hole starting with poor tee shots. Joe won the hole with a 7! Joe and Greg both noted that Greg’s game was not up to his standard since he was playing only his second round since a shoulder injury layoff. “Playing those matches was a terrific way for a new member to get to know some great players and great guys”. Joe played Dean McAthie and Brad Marcus on his way to the championship match.
Ron was the Net Flight winner 3 and 2 over Ric Handler. Ric reported “Ron’s famous determination was on full display, grinding over every shot and getting it up and down when it mattered at the end”. Notable holes were at 13 where Ric was six feet from the hole in two and Ron was lying 3 in the right rough. He got up and down for a net birdy to tie Ric’s natural bird and stay 3-up. On 14, with Ric on in 5, Ron’s fifth shot from 70 yards hit the flag pole and stopped 10-inches away. Ron goes 3-up. Ric wins 15 with a par to bring it back to -2. On 16 Ric scored an easy birdie. Ron, who is on in three, sinks a 12-footer for the win. “I was lucky to win since Ric was shooting laser shots to the greens and was seldom in trouble. I would say it came down to getting a lot of strokes (22) and three lucky shots I don’t normally make. It was a pleasure playing Ric who is a very talented golfer (5 over par for the day with 4 birdies) and a real gentleman” summarized Ron.
